The good news was that he hadn’t needed to complain about Nicky once during the date. Dimitriou, still as self-absorbed and vaguely threatening as ever, behaved like a perfect gentleman. He’d left his guards behind, playing the everyman for the night. He told tales of his trips to Greece, always dropping subtle reminders of his wealth and influence and general good taste. He encouraged Sam to order anything he liked and genuinely seemed to want to know if he liked his meal. He was charming and poised and, more than once, Sam caught others in the restaurant observing them in one of those good ways that would have made awkward teen Sam preen a little and feel like he’d won some incredible prize.

The bad news was that Sam was no longer an awkward teen. Wait, was that bad news? Because Sam the adult could at least see through the layers of bullshit and was at no risk of being taken in by the charade.

There was nothing more to this than having to seduce Dimitriou enough to gain Nicolas access to the man’s house. He was allowed to hate every second of flirting, of loaded banter, of careful near-brushes of hands across the table. He was allowed to feel awkward when he remembered Beverly and Nicolas were listening in on the conversation.

Especially when Dimitriou leaned in even closer to him and whispered, “Shall I drop you off somewhere, or …?”

Sam swallowed and whispered back, “Or.” He drew away a bit, smiled, and added, “Let me go wash my hands and I’ll meet you at the door?”

The possessive light in Dimitriou’s eyes as he nodded made Sam’s gut churn, but he kept his mouth closed tightly and managed not to sprint toward the bathroom. It was blessedly empty, and he shut himself in the farthest stall. He didn’t sit. He leaned over, bracing his hands above his knees, lowered his head, closed his eyes, and tried to breathe through the first brushes of what was probably going to be a doozy of a panic attack.

“Hey. Hey, hey, Sam—”

He sucked down a shuddering inhalation.

Nicolas’s voice was steady, smooth, and upsettingly calm in his ear. “Sam, are you okay? What’s going on? Where are you? It’s kind of got an echo there.”

“Bathroom,” he got out. “Just … just freaking out a bit.”

“Did he do something?”

His laugh was choked and garbled, but he couldn’t help smiling at Nicolas’s angry tone. Not angry at him, at least.

“Yeah,” Sam said, “yeah, he did something. You heard it. He took the bait. We’re going back to his place.”

Dead air.

“Isn’t that what you wanted?” Sam murmured.

“It is,” Nicolas replied just as quietly. “That’s … that’s some really good work.”

“Do you know where his house is?” With no more time left to freak out, he left the stall and faced his reflection in the mirror. There were spots of high color in his cheeks, but those could be easily explained away by excitement and nerves. He grimaced and asked, “Am I … am I going to be alone with him?”

“No.
